President Bush and his aides are annoyed that people keep misinterpreting his Iraq policy as stay the course. A complete distortion, they say. That is not a stay-the-course policy, White House press secretary Tony Snow declared yesterday.

Where would anyone have gotten that idea? Well, maybe from Bush.

"What you have is not 'stay the course' but in fact a study in constant motion," White House press secretary Tony Snow said yesterday.

The motion in question? Why I believe that's called spinning.

Yes, Mr. Snow. How could anyone have ever interpreted stay the course as stay the course? How foolish of us to take the president's words at face value. At least we don't have a president who flip-flops on their opinion or the meaning of their words. How awful that would have been.

Okay, once again, I apologize for the sarcasm as I realize how poor my attempts at it must come across in plain text format.

So is he cutting and running from the phrase?

But the White House is cutting and running from "stay the course." A phrase meant to connote steely resolve instead has become a symbol for being out of touch and rigid in the face of a war that seems to grow worse by the week…

Yes, according to the author of this piece anyway.
