Plan B: The behind-the-counter over-the-counter pill?

advertisement

Three and a half years after the original application to make the morning-after birth control pill (Plan-B) available without a prescription, the FDA continues to stall.

What set [The View co-host Elisabeth] Hasselbeck off [last week] was an announcement that the FDA planned to approve over the counter sales of the emergency contraceptive Plan B, if the manufacturer, Duramed Research, Inc., a subsidiary of Barr Pharmaceuticals, altered its application to limit the drug's availability to women 18 years and older. The agency also made the unprecedented move of requiring Duramed to come up with a plan to police pharmacies, assuring they comply with the restricted distribution plan.

What made the announcement even more bizarre was that it came one day before the Senate confirmation hearing for Acting Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Also, you should the list of objections to Plan-B at the Onion (p.s. - it's a satire web site, so don't get so excited, okay?).
